ThereisnomonthinthewholeyearinwhichnaturewearsamorebeautifulappearancethaninthemonthofAugust.Springhasmanybeauties,andMayisafreshandbloomingmonth,butthecharmsofthistimeofyearareenhancedbytheircontrastwiththewinterseason.Augusthasnosuchadvantage.Itcomeswhenweremembernothingbutclearskies,greenfields,andsweet-smellingflowers—whentherecollectionofsnow,andice,andbleakwinds,hasfadedfromourmindsascompletelyastheyhavedisappearedfromtheearth—andyetwhatapleasanttimeitis!Orchardsandcornfieldsringwiththehumoflabour;treesbendbeneaththethickclustersofrichfruitwhichbowtheirbranchestotheground;andthecorn,piledingracefulsheaves,orwavingineverylightbreaththatsweepsaboveit,asifitwooedthesickle,tingesthelandscapewithagoldenhue.Amellowsoftnessappearstohangoverthewholeearth;theinfluenceoftheseasonseemstoextenditselftotheverywagon,whoseslowmotionacrossthewell-reapedfieldisperceptibleonlytotheeye,butstrikeswithnoharshsoundupontheear.
