Mr.Pickwickhadfeltsomeapprehensionsinconsequenceoftheunusualabsenceofhistwofriends,whichtheirmysteriousbehaviourduringthewholemorninghadbynomeanstendedtodiminish.Itwas,therefore,withmorethanordinarypleasurethatherosetogreetthemwhentheyagainentered;andwithmorethanordinaryinterestthatheinquiredwhathadoccurredtodetainthemfromhissociety.Inreplytohisquestionsonthispoint,Mr.Snodgrasswasabouttoofferanhistoricalaccountofthecircumstancesjustnowdetailed,whenhewassuddenlycheckedbyobservingthattherewerepresent,notonlyMr.Tupmanandtheirstage-coachcompanionoftheprecedingday,butanotherstrangerofequallysingularappearance.Itwasacareworn-lookingman,whosesallowface,anddeeply-sunkeneyes,wererenderedstillmorestrikingthanNaturehadmadethem,bythestraightblackhairwhichhunginmatteddisorderhalf-waydownhisface.Hiseyeswerealmostunnaturallybrightandpiercing;hischeek-boneswerehighandprominent;andhisjawsweresolongandlank,thatanobserverwouldhavesupposedthathewasdrawingthefleshofhisfacein,foramoment,bysomecontractionofthemuscles,ifhishalf-openedmouthandimmovableexpressionhadnotannouncedthatitwashisordinaryappearance.Roundhisneckheworeagreenshawl,withthelargeendsstragglingoverhischest,andmakingtheirappearanceoccasionallybeneaththewornbutton-holesofhisoldwaistcoat.
