The Pickwickians
Thefirstrayoflightwhichilluminesthegloom,andconvertsintoadazzlingbrilliancythatobscurityinwhichtheearlierhistoryofthepubliccareeroftheimmortalPickwickwouldappeartobeinvolved,isderivedfromtheperusalofthefollowingentryintheTransactionsofthePickwickClub,whichtheeditorofthesepapersfeelsthehighestpleasureinlayingbeforehisreaders,asaproofofthecarefulattention,indefatigableassiduity,andnicediscrimination,withwhichhissearchamongthemultifariousdocumentsconfidedtohimhasbeenconducted.
‘May12,1827.JosephSmiggers,Esq.,P.V.P.M.P.C.[PerpetualVice–President—MemberPickwickClub],presiding.Thefollowingresolutionsunanimouslyagreedto:—
‘ThatthisAssociationhasheardread,withfeelingsofunmingledsatisfaction,andunqualifiedapproval,thepapercommunicatedbySamuelPickwick,Esq.,G.C.M.P.C.[GeneralChairman—MemberPickwickClub],entitled"SpeculationsontheSourceoftheHampsteadPonds,withsomeObservationsontheTheoryofTittlebats;"andthatthisAssociationdoesherebyreturnitswarmestthankstothesaidSamuelPickwick,Esq.,G.C.M.P.C.,forthesame.
‘ThatwhilethisAssociationisdeeplysensibleoftheadvantageswhichmustaccruetothecauseofscience,fromtheproductiontowhichtheyhavejustadverted—nolessthanfromtheunweariedresearchesofSamuelPickwick,Esq.,G.C.M.P.C.
