Itis,andhasbeen,timeoutofmind,theremarkablefateofthiscourttobe,somehoworother,heldandunderstood,bythegeneralconsentofallthedestituteshabby-genteelpeopleinLondon,astheircommonresort,andplaceofdailyrefuge.Itisalwaysfull.Thesteamsofbeerandspiritsperpetuallyascendtotheceiling,and,beingcondensedbytheheat,rolldownthewallslikerain;therearemoreoldsuitsofclothesinitatonetime,thanwillbeofferedforsaleinallHoundsditchinatwelvemonth;moreunwashedskinsandgrizzlybeardsthanallthepumpsandshaving-shopsbetweenTyburnandWhitechapelcouldrenderdecent,betweensunriseandsunset.
