           TheremainderoftheperiodwhichMr.PickwickhadassignedasthedurationofthestayatBathpassedoverwithouttheoccurrenceofanythingmaterial.Trinitytermcommenced.Ontheexpirationofitsfirstweek,Mr.PickwickandhisfriendsreturnedtoLondon;andtheformergentleman,attendedofcoursebySam,straightwayrepairedtohisoldquartersattheGeorgeandVulture.

           Onthethirdmorningaftertheirarrival,justasalltheclocksinthecitywerestrikingnineindividually,andsomewhereaboutninehundredandninety-ninecollectively,SamwastakingtheairinGeorgeYard,whenaqueersortoffresh-paintedvehicledroveup,outofwhichtherejumpedwithgreatagility,throwingthereinstoastoutmanwhosatbesidehim,aqueersortofgentleman,whoseemedmadeforthevehicle,andthevehicleforhim.

           Thevehiclewasnotexactlyagig,neitherwasitastanhope.Itwasnotwhatiscurrentlydenominatedadog-cart,neitherwasitataxedcart,norachaise-cart,noraguillotinedcabriolet;andyetithadsomethingofthecharacterofeachandeveryofthesemachines.Itwaspaintedabrightyellow,withtheshaftsandwheelspickedoutinblack;andthedriversatintheorthodoxsportingstyle,oncushionspiledabouttwofeetabovetherail.Thehorsewasabay,awell-lookinganimalenough;butwithsomethingofaflashanddog-fightingairabouthim,nevertheless,whichaccordedbothwiththevehicleandhismaster.
