           FortwodaysaftertheDEJEUNEatMrs.Hunter’s,thePickwickiansremainedatEatanswill,anxiouslyawaitingthearrivalofsomeintelligencefromtheirreveredleader.Mr.TupmanandMr.Snodgrasswereonceagainlefttotheirownmeansofamusement;forMr.Winkle,incompliancewithamostpressinginvitation,continuedtoresideatMr.Pott’shouse,andtodevotehistimetothecompanionshipofhisamiablelady.NorwastheoccasionalsocietyofMr.Potthimselfwantingtocompletetheirfelicity.DeeplyimmersedintheintensityofhisspeculationsforthepublicwealandthedestructionoftheINDEPENDENT,itwasnotthehabitofthatgreatmantodescendfromhismentalpinnacletothehumblelevelofordinaryminds.Onthisoccasion,however,andasifexpresslyincomplimenttoanyfollowerofMr.Pickwick’s,heunbent,relaxed,steppeddownfromhispedestal,andwalkedupontheground,benignlyadaptinghisremarkstothecomprehensionoftheherd,andseeminginoutwardform,ifnotinspirit,tobeoneofthem.

           SuchhavingbeenthedemeanourofthiscelebratedpubliccharactertowardsMr.Winkle,itwillbereadilyimaginedthatconsiderablesurprisewasdepictedonthecountenanceofthelattergentleman,when,ashewassittingaloneinthebreakfast–room,thedoorwashastilythrownopen,andashastilyclosed,ontheentranceofMr.
