           ForawholeweekafterthehappyarrivalofMr.WinklefromBirmingham,Mr.PickwickandSamWellerwerefromhomealldaylong,onlyreturningjustintimefordinner,andthenwearinganairofmysteryandimportancequiteforeigntotheirnatures.Itwasevidentthatverygraveandeventfulproceedingswereonfoot;butvarioussurmiseswereafloat,respectingtheirprecisecharacter.Some(amongwhomwasMr.Tupman)weredisposedtothinkthatMr.Pickwickcontemplatedamatrimonialalliance;butthisideatheladiesmoststrenuouslyrepudiated.Othersratherinclinedtothebeliefthathehadprojectedsomedistanttour,andwasatpresentoccupiedineffectingthepreliminaryarrangements;butthisagainwasstoutlydeniedbySamhimself,whohadunequivocallystated,whencross-examinedbyMary,thatnonewjourneysweretobeundertaken.Atlength,whenthebrainsofthewholepartyhadbeenrackedforsixlongdays,byunavailingspeculation,itwasunanimouslyresolvedthatMr.Pickwickshouldbecalledupontoexplainhisconduct,andtostatedistinctlywhyhehadthusabsentedhimselffromthesocietyofhisadmiringfriends.

           Withthisview,Mr.WardleinvitedthefullcircletodinnerattheAdelphi;andthedecantershavingbeenthricesentround,openedthebusiness.

           ‘Weareallanxioustoknow,’saidtheoldgentleman,‘whatwehavedonetooffendyou,andtoinduceyoutodesertusanddevoteyourselftothesesolitarywalks.’
