           ‘Doesthepersonwantme,Sam?’inquiredMr.Pickwick.

           ‘Hewantsyoupartickler;andnooneelse‘lldo,asthedevil’sprivatesecretarysaidvenhefetchedavayDoctorFaustus,’repliedMr.Weller.

           ‘HE.Isitagentleman?’saidMr.Pickwick.

           ‘Awerygoodimitationo’one,ifitain’t,’repliedMr.Weller.

           ‘Butthisisalady’scard,’saidMr.Pickwick.

           ‘Givenmebyagen’l’m’n,howsoever,’repliedSam,‘andhe’sa-waitin’inthedrawing-roomsaidhe’dratherwaitallday,thannotseeyou.’

           Mr.Pickwick,onhearingthisdetermination,descendedtothedrawing-room,wheresatagraveman,whostarteduponhisentrance,andsaid,withanairofprofoundrespect:—
