Wewillfranklyacknowledgethat,uptotheperiodofourbeingfirstimmersedinthevoluminouspapersofthePickwickClub,wehadneverheardofEatanswill;wewillwithequalcandouradmitthatwehaveinvainsearchedforproofoftheactualexistenceofsuchaplaceatthepresentday.KnowingthedeepreliancetobeplacedoneverynoteandstatementofMr.Pickwick’s,andnotpresumingtosetupourrecollectionagainsttherecordeddeclarationsofthatgreatman,wehaveconsultedeveryauthority,bearinguponthesubject,towhichwecouldpossiblyrefer.WehavetracedeverynameinschedulesAandB,withoutmeetingwiththatofEatanswill;wehaveminutelyexaminedeverycornerofthepocketcountymapsissuedforthebenefitofsocietybyourdistinguishedpublishers,andthesameresulthasattendedourinvestigation.WearethereforeledtobelievethatMr.Pickwick,withthatanxiousdesiretoabstainfromgivingoffencetoany,andwiththosedelicatefeelingsforwhichallwhoknewhimwellknowhewassoeminentlyremarkable,purposelysubstitutedafictitiousdesignation,fortherealnameoftheplaceinwhichhisobservationsweremade.Weareconfirmedinthisbeliefbyalittlecircumstance,apparentlyslightandtrivialinitself,butwhenconsideredinthispointofview,notundeservingofnotice.InMr.
