           Mr.Pickwickthoughtsoalso;but,underallthecircumstances,heconsidereditamatterofsoundpolicytobesilent.Mr.Simpsonmusedforafewmomentsafterthis,andthen,thrustinghisheadoutofthewindow,gaveashrillwhistle,andpronouncedsomewordaloud,severaltimes.Whatthewordwas,Mr.Pickwickcouldnotdistinguish;butheratherinferredthatitmustbesomenicknamewhichdistinguishedMr.Martin,fromthefactofagreatnumberofgentlemenonthegroundbelow,immediatelyproceedingtocry‘Butcher!’inimitationofthetoneinwhichthatusefulclassofsocietyarewont,diurnally,tomaketheirpresenceknownatarearailings.

           SubsequentoccurrencesconfirmedtheaccuracyofMr.Pickwick’simpression;for,inafewseconds,agentleman,prematurelybroadforhisyears,clothedinaprofessionalbluejeanfrockandtop-bootswithcirculartoes,enteredtheroomnearlyoutofbreath,closelyfollowedbyanothergentlemaninveryshabbyblack,andasealskincap.Thelattergentleman,whofastenedhiscoatallthewayuptohischinbymeansofapinandabuttonalternately,hadaverycoarseredface,andlookedlikeadrunkenchaplain;which,indeed,hewas.

           ThesetwogentlemenhavingbyturnsperusedMr.Pickwick’sbillet,theoneexpressedhisopinionthatitwas‘arig,’andtheotherhisconvictionthatitwas‘ago.’Havingrecordedtheirfeelingsintheseveryintelligibleterms,theylookedatMr.Pickwickandeachotherinawkwardsilence.
