Mr.Pickwickconcludedamidstawhirlwindofapplause;andoncemorewerethelungsofthesupernumeraries,underMr.Weller’scommand,broughtintoactiveandefficientoperation.Mr.WardleproposedMr.Pickwick;Mr.Pickwickproposedtheoldlady.Mr.SnodgrassproposedMr.Wardle;Mr.WardleproposedMr.Snodgrass.OneofthepoorrelationsproposedMr.Tupman,andtheotherpoorrelationproposedMr.Winkle;allwashappinessandfestivity,untilthemysteriousdisappearanceofboththepoorrelationsbeneaththetable,warnedthepartythatitwastimetoadjourn.
Atdinnertheymetagain,afterafive-and-twentymilewalk,undertakenbythemalesatWardle’srecommendation,togetridoftheeffectsofthewineatbreakfast.Thepoorrelationshadkeptinbedallday,withtheviewofattainingthesamehappyconsummation,but,astheyhadbeenunsuccessful,theystoppedthere.Mr.Wellerkeptthedomesticsinastateofperpetualhilarity;andthefatboydividedhistimeintosmallalternateallotmentsofeatingandsleeping.
Thedinnerwasasheartyanaffairasthebreakfast,andwasquiteasnoisy,withoutthetears.Thencamethedessertandsomemoretoasts.
