           Biddingtheotherpassengersgood-night,inarathersnappishmanner,thestrangeralighted.Hewasashortishgentleman,withverystiffblackhaircutintheporcupineorblacking-brushstyle,andstandingstiffandstraightalloverhishead;hisaspectwaspompousandthreatening;hismannerwasperemptory;hiseyesweresharpandrestless;andhiswholebearingbespokeafeelingofgreatconfidenceinhimself,andaconsciousnessofimmeasurablesuperiorityoverallotherpeople.

           ThisgentlemanwasshownintotheroomoriginallyassignedtothepatrioticMr.Pott;andthewaiterremarked,indumbastonishmentatthesingularcoincidence,thathehadnosoonerlightedthecandlesthanthegentleman,divingintohishat,drewforthanewspaper,andbegantoreaditwiththeverysameexpressionofindignantscorn,which,uponthemajesticfeaturesofPott,hadparalysedhisenergiesanhourbefore.Themanobservedtoo,that,whereasMr.Pott’sscornhadbeenrousedbyanewspaperheadedtheEatanswillINDEPENDENT,thisgentleman’switheringcontemptwasawakenedbyanewspaperentitledtheEatanswillGAZETTE.
