           BobSawyerandBenjaminAllen,whohadirreverentlyfallenasleepduringthereadingofthequotationfromtheEatanswillGAZETTE,andthediscussionwhichfollowedit,wererousedbythemerewhisperingofthetalismanicword‘Dinner’intheirears;andtodinnertheywentwithgooddigestionwaitingonappetite,andhealthonboth,andawaiteronallthree.

           Inthecourseofthedinnerandthesittingwhichsucceededit,Mr.Pottdescending,forafewmoments,todomestictopics,informedMr.PickwickthattheairofEatanswillnotagreeingwithhislady,shewasthenengagedinmakingatourofdifferentfashionablewatering-placeswithaviewtotherecoveryofherwontedhealthandspirits;thiswasadelicateveilingofthefactthatMrs.Pott,actinguponheroften-repeatedthreatofseparation,had,invirtueofanarrangementnegotiatedbyherbrother,thelieutenant,andconcludedbyMr.Pott,permanentlyretiredwiththefaithfulbodyguardupononemoietyorhalfpartoftheannualincomeandprofitsarisingfromtheeditorshipandsaleoftheEatanswillGAZETTE.

           WhilethegreatMr.Pottwasdwellinguponthisandothermatters,enliveningtheconversationfromtimetotimewithvariousextractsfromhisownlucubrations,asternstranger,callingfromthewindowofastage-coach,outwardbound,whichhaltedattheinntodeliverpackages,requestedtoknowwhetherifhestoppedshortonhisjourneyandremainedthereforthenight,hecouldbefurnishedwiththenecessaryaccommodationofabedandbedstead.
