           Itwasacross-countryroad,full,afterthefirstthreeorfourmiles,ofholesandcart-ruts,which,beingcoveredbythesnow,weresomanypitfallstothetremblinghorses,andobligedthemtokeepafootpace.Asitwasnexttoimpossibleformensomuchagitatedastheywerebythistime,tositstillandmovesoslowly,allthreegotoutandploddedonbehindthecarriage.Thedistanceseemedinterminable,andthewalkwasmostlaborious.Aseachwasthinkingwithinhimselfthatthedrivermusthavelosthisway,achurchbell,closeathand,struckthehourofmidnight,andthecarriagestopped.Ithadmovedsoftlyenough,butwhenitceasedtocrunchthesnow,thesilencewasasstartlingasifsomegreatnoisehadbeenreplacedbyperfectstillness.
