           TheMarchioness,insayingthesewords,broughtalittletabletothebedside,tookherseatatit,andbegantoworkawayattheconcoctionofsomecoolingdrink,withtheaddressofascoreofchemists.RichardSwivellerbeingindeedfatigued,fellintoaslumber,andwakinginabouthalfanhour,inquiredwhattimeitwas.

           ‘Justgonehalfaftersix,’repliedhissmallfriend,helpinghimtositupagain.

           ‘Marchioness,’saidRichard,passinghishandoverhisforeheadandturningsuddenlyround,asthoughthesubjectbutthatmomentflasheduponhim,‘whathasbecomeofKit?’

           Hehadbeensentencedtotransportationforagreatmanyyears,shesaid.

           ‘Hashegone?’askedDick‘hismotherhowisshe,whathasbecomeofher?’

           Dicklookedveryearnestlyathislittlefriend:andhiseyes,beinglargeandhollowfromillness,assistedtheexpressionsomuch,thatshewasquitefrightened,andbesoughthimnottothinkanymoreaboutit.Whathadalreadyfallenfromher,however,hadnotonlypiquedhiscuriosity,butseriouslyalarmedhim,whereforeheurgedhertotellhimtheworstatonce.
