           Themessengersoonreturnedattheheadofalongrowofurchins,greatandsmall,who,beingconfrontedbythebacheloratthehousedoor,fellintovariousconvulsionsofpoliteness;clutchingtheirhatsandcaps,squeezingthemintothesmallestpossibledimensions,andmakingallmannerofbowsandscrapes,whichthelittleoldgentlemancontemplatedwithexcessivesatisfaction,andexpressedhisapprovalofbyagreatmanynodsandsmiles.Indeed,hisapprobationoftheboyswasbynomeanssoscrupulouslydisguisedashehadledtheschoolmastertosuppose,inasmuchasitbrokeoutinsundryloudwhispersandconfidentialremarkswhichwereperfectlyaudibletothemeveryone.
