           Theoldchurchbellrangoutthehourwithamournfulsound,asifithadgrownsadfromsomuchcommuningwiththedeadandunheededwarningtotheliving;thefallenleavesrustled;thegrassstirreduponthegraves;allelsewasstillandsleeping.

           Someofthosedreamlesssleeperslayclosewithintheshadowofthechurchtouchingthewall,asiftheyclungtoitforcomfortandprotection.Othershadchosentoliebeneaththechangingshadeoftrees;othersbythepath,thatfootstepsmightcomenearthem;others,amongthegravesoflittlechildren.Somehaddesiredtorestbeneaththeverygroundtheyhadtroddenintheirdailywalks;some,wherethesettingsunmightshineupontheirbeds;some,whereitslightwouldfalluponthemwhenitrose.Perhapsnotoneoftheimprisonedsoulshadbeenablequitetoseparateitselfinlivingthoughtfromitsoldcompanion.Ifanyhad,ithadstillfeltforitalovelikethatwhichcaptiveshavebeenknowntobeartowardsthecellinwhichtheyhavebeenlongconfined,and,evenatparting,hunguponitsnarrowboundsaffectionately.

           Itwaslongbeforethechildclosedthewindow,andapproachedherbed.Againsomethingofthesamesensationasbeforeaninvoluntarychillamomentaryfeelingakintofearbutvanishingdirectly,andleavingnoalarmbehind.Again,too,dreamsofthelittlescholar;oftheroofopening,andacolumnofbrightfaces,risingfarawayintothesky,asshehadseeninsomeoldscripturalpictureonce,andlookingdownonher,asleep.Itwasasweetandhappydream.
