Theschoolmasterreceivedthiscommunicationwithperfectcheerfulness,observingthathehadadaytospare—twodaysforthatmatter—andcouldverywellaffordtowait.Asthepatientwastositupintheevening,heappointedtovisitherinherroomatacertainhour,andramblingoutwithhisbook,didnotreturnuntilthehourarrived.
Nellcouldnothelpweepingwhentheywereleftalone;whereat,andatsightofherpalefaceandwastedfigure,thesimpleschoolmastershedafewtearshimself,atthesametimeshowinginveryenergeticlanguagehowfoolishitwastodoso,andhowveryeasilyitcouldbeavoided,ifonetried.
