           Everybodycalledforhisorherfavouriteremedy,whichnobodybrought;eachcriedformoreair,atthesametimecarefullyexcludingwhatairtherewas,byclosingroundtheobjectofsympathy;andallwonderedwhysomebodyelsedidn’tdowhatitneverappearedtooccurtothemmightbedonebythemselves.

           Thelandlady,however,whopossessedmorereadinessandactivitythananyofthem,andwhohadwithalaquickerperceptionofthemeritsofthecase,sooncamerunningin,withalittlehotbrandyandwater,followedbyherservant-girl,carryingvinegar,hartshorn,smelling-salts,andsuchotherrestoratives;which,beingdulyadministered,recoveredthechildsofarastoenablehertothanktheminafaintvoice,andtoextendherhandtothepoorschoolmaster,whostood,withananxiousface,hardby.Withoutsufferinghertospeakanotherword,orsomuchastostirafingeranymore,thewomenstraightwaycarriedherofftobed;and,havingcoveredherupwarm,bathedhercoldfeet,andwrappedtheminflannel,theydespatchedamessengerforthedoctor.

           Thedoctor,whowasared-nosedgentlemanwithagreatbunchofsealsdanglingbelowawaistcoatofribbedblacksatin,arrivedwithallspeed,andtakinghisseatbythebedsideofpoorNell,drewouthiswatch,andfeltherpulse.Thenhelookedathertongue,thenhefeltherpulseagain,andwhilehedidso,heeyedthehalf-emptiedwine-glassasifinprofoundabstraction.

           ‘Ishouldgiveher,’saidthedoctoratlength,‘atea-spoonful,everynowandthen,ofhotbrandyandwater.
