LittleBethelmighthavebeennearer,andmighthavebeeninastraighterroad,thoughinthatcasethereverendgentlemanwhopresidedoveritscongregationwouldhavelosthisfavouriteallusiontothecrookedwaysbywhichitwasapproached,andwhichenabledhimtolikenittoParadiseitself,incontradistinctiontotheparishchurchandthebroadthoroughfareleadingthereunto.Kitfoundit,atlast,aftersometrouble,andpausingatthedoortotakebreaththathemightenterwithbecomingdecency,passedintothechapel.
Itwasnotbadlynamedinonerespect,beingintruthaparticularlylittleBethel—aBethelofthesmallestdimensions—withasmallnumberofsmallpews,andasmallpulpit,inwhichasmallgentleman(bytradeaShoemaker,andbycallingaDivine)wasdeliveringinabynomeanssmallvoice,abynomeanssmallsermon,judgingofitsdimensionsbytheconditionofhisaudience,which,iftheirgrossamountwerebutsmall,comprisedastillsmallernumberofhearers,asthemajoritywereslumbering.
