Thetiesthatbindthewealthyandtheproudtohomemaybeforgedonearth,butthosewhichlinkthepoormantohishumblehearthareofthetruermetalandbearthestampofHeaven.Themanofhighdescentmaylovethehallsandlandsofhisinheritanceaspartofhimself:astrophiesofhisbirthandpower;hisassociationswiththemareassociationsofprideandwealthandtriumph;thepoorman’sattachmenttothetenementsheholds,whichstrangershaveheldbefore,andmayto-morrowoccupyagain,hasaworthierroot,struckdeepintoapurersoil.Hishouseholdgodsareoffleshandblood,withnoalloyofsilver,gold,orpreciousstone;hehasnopropertybutintheaffectionsofhisownheart;andwhentheyendearbarefloorsandwalls,despiteofragsandtoilandscantyfare,thatmanhashisloveofhomefromGod,andhisrudehutbecomesasolemnplace.
Oh!ifthosewhorulethedestiniesofnationswouldbutrememberthis—iftheywouldbutthinkhowharditisfortheverypoortohaveengenderedintheirhearts,thatloveofhomefromwhichalldomesticvirtuesspring,whentheyliveindenseandsqualidmasseswheresocialdecencyislost,orratherneverfound—iftheywouldbutturnasidefromthewidethoroughfaresandgreathouses,andstrivetoimprovethewretcheddwellingsinbye-wayswhereonlyPovertymaywalk—manylowroofswouldpointmoretrulytothesky,thantheloftieststeeplethatnowrearsproudlyupfromthemidstofguilt,andcrime,andhorribledisease,tomockthembyitscontrast.
