Thisbeingaseasonfavourabletoconversation,andtheroombeingacool,shady,lazykindofplace,withsomeplantsattheopenwindowshuttingoutthedust,andinterposingpleasantlyenoughbetweentheteatablewithinandtheoldTowerwithout,itisnowonderthattheladiesfeltaninclinationtotalkandlinger,especiallywhentherearetakenintoaccounttheadditionalinducementsoffreshbutter,newbread,shrimps,andwatercresses.
Now,theladiesbeingtogetherunderthesecircumstances,itwasextremelynaturalthatthediscourseshouldturnuponthepropensityofmankindtotyrannizeovertheweakersex,andthedutythatdevelopedupontheweakersextoresistthattyrannyandasserttheirrightsanddignity.Itwasnaturalforfourreasons:firstly,becauseMrsQuilpbeingayoungwomanandnotoriouslyunderthedominionofherhusbandoughttobeexcitedtorebel;secondly,becauseMrsQuilp’sparentwasknowntobelaudablyshrewishinherdispositionandinclinedtoresistmaleauthority;thirdly,becauseeachvisitorwishedtoshowforherselfhowsuperiorshewasinthisrespecttothegeneralityofhersex;andfourthly,becausethecompanybeingaccustomedtoscandaliseeachotherinpairs,weredeprivedoftheirusualsubjectofconversationnowthattheywereallassembledinclosefriendship,andhadconsequentlynobetteremploymentthantoattackthecommonenemy.
