           Thesesocialqualities,whichMissSallyfirstdiscoveredbyaccident,graduallymadesuchanimpressionuponher,thatshewouldentreatMrSwivellertorelaxasthoughshewerenotby,whichMrSwiveller,nothingloth,wouldreadilyconsenttodo.Bythesemeansafriendshipsprungupbetweenthem.MrSwivellergraduallycametolookuponherasherbrotherSampsondid,andashewouldhavelookeduponanyotherclerk.HeimpartedtoherthemysteryofgoingtheoddmanorplainNewmarketforfruit,ginger-beer,bakedpotatoes,orevenamodestquencher,ofwhichMissBrassdidnotscrupletopartake.Hewouldoftenpersuadehertoundertakehisshareofwritinginadditiontoherown;nay,hewouldsometimesrewardherwithaheartyslapontheback,andprotestthatshewasadevilishgoodfellow,ajollydog,andsoforth;allofwhichcomplimentsMissSallywouldreceiveinentiregoodpartandwithperfectsatisfaction.

           OnecircumstancetroubledMrSwiveller’smindverymuch,andthatwasthatthesmallservantalwaysremainedsomewhereinthebowelsoftheearthunderBevisMarks,andnevercametothesurfaceunlessthesinglegentlemanranghisbell,whenshewouldansweritandimmediatelydisappearagain.Sheneverwentout,orcameintotheoffice,orhadacleanface,ortookoffthecoarseapron,orlookedoutofanyoneofthewindows,orstoodatthestreet-doorforabreathofair,orhadanyrestorenjoymentwhatever.Nobodyevercametoseeher,nobodyspokeofher,nobodycaredabouther.
