           Sheputherhandinmineasconfidinglyasifshehadknownmefromhercradle,andwetrudgedawaytogether;thelittlecreatureaccommodatingherpacetomine,andratherseemingtoleadandtakecareofmethanItobeprotectingher.Iobservedthateverynowandthenshestoleacuriouslookatmyface,asiftomakequitesurethatIwasnotdeceivingher,andthattheseglances(verysharpandkeentheyweretoo)seemedtoincreaseherconfidenceateveryrepetition.

           Formypart,mycuriosityandinterestwereatleastequaltothechild’s,forchildshecertainlywas,althoughIthoughtitprobablefromwhatIcouldmakeout,thatherverysmallanddelicateframeimpartedapeculiaryouthfulnesstoherappearance.Thoughmorescantilyattiredthanshemighthavebeenshewasdressedwithperfectneatness,andbetrayednomarksofpovertyorneglect.
