           Atfirstthetwotravellersspokelittle,andonlyinwhispers,butastheygrewmorefamiliarwiththeplacetheyventuredtoconversewithgreaterfreedom,andtalkedaboutthecountrythroughwhichtheywerepassing,andthedifferentobjectsthatpresentedthemselves,untiltheoldmanfellasleep;whichtheladyofthecaravanobserving,invitedNelltocomeandsitbesideher.

           ‘Well,child,’shesaid,‘howdoyoulikethiswayoftravelling?’

           Nellrepliedthatshethoughtitwasverypleasantindeed,towhichtheladyassentedinthecaseofpeoplewhohadtheirspirits.Forherself,shesaid,shewastroubledwithalownessinthatrespectwhichrequiredaconstantstimulant;thoughwhethertheaforesaidstimulantwasderivedfromthesuspiciousbottleofwhichmentionhasbeenalreadymadeorfromothersources,shedidnotsay.

           Nellthoughtthatshecouldsometimesdispensewithherownappetiteveryconveniently;andthought,moreover,thattherewasnothingeitherinthelady’spersonalappearanceorinhermanneroftakingtea,toleadtotheconclusionthathernaturalrelishformeatanddrinkhadatallfailedher.Shesilentlyassented,however,asindutybound,towhattheladyhadsaid,andwaiteduntilsheshouldspeakagain.
