           Theladyofthecaravanthenbadehimcomeupthestepslikewise,butthedrumprovinganinconvenienttablefortwo,theydescendedagain,andsatuponthegrass,whereshehandeddowntothemthetea-tray,thebreadandbutter,theknuckleofham,andinshorteverythingofwhichshehadpartakenherself,exceptthebottlewhichshehadalreadyembracedanopportunityofslippingintoherpocket.

           ‘Set‘emoutnearthehindwheels,child,that’sthebestplace,’saidtheirfriend,superintendingthearrangementsfromabove.‘Nowhanduptheteapotforalittlemorehotwater,andapinchoffreshtea,andthenbothofyoueatanddrinkasmuchasyoucan,anddon’tspareanything;that’sallIaskofyou.’

           Theymightperhapshavecarriedoutthelady’swish,ifithadbeenlessfreelyexpressed,orevenifithadnotbeenexpressedatall.Butasthisdirectionrelievedthemfromanyshadowofdelicacyoruneasiness,theymadeaheartymealandenjoyedittotheutmost.

           Whiletheywerethusengaged,theladyofthecaravanalightedontheearth,andwithherhandsclaspedbehindher,andherlargebonnettremblingexcessively,walkedupanddowninameasuredtreadandverystatelymanner,surveyingthecaravanfromtimetotimewithanairofcalmdelight,andderivingparticulargratificationfromtheredpanelsandthebrassknocker.
