Itisdifficult,however,topleaseeverybody,asmostofuswouldhavediscovered,evenwithoutthefablewhichbearsthatmoral,andinthecourseoftheafternoonseveralmothersandauntsofpupilslookedintoexpresstheirentiredisapprovaloftheschoolmaster’sproceeding.Afewconfinedthemselvestohints,suchaspolitelyinquiringwhatred-letterdayorsaint’sdaythealmanacksaiditwas;afew(theseweretheprofoundvillagepoliticians)arguedthatitwasaslighttothethroneandanaffronttochurchandstate,andsavouredofrevolutionaryprinciples,tograntahalf-holidayuponanylighteroccasionthanthebirthdayoftheMonarch;butthemajorityexpressedtheirdispleasureonprivategroundsandinplainterms,arguingthattoputthepupilsonthisshortallowanceoflearningwasnothingbutanactofdownrightrobberyandfraud:andoneoldlady,findingthatshecouldnotinflameorirritatethepeaceableschoolmasterbytalkingtohim,bouncedoutofhishouseandtalkedathimforhalf-an-houroutsidehisownwindow,toanotheroldlady,sayingthatofcoursehewoulddeductthishalf-holidayfromhisweeklycharge,orofcoursehewouldnaturallyexpecttohaveanoppositionstartedagainsthim;therewasnowantofidlechapsinthatneighbourhood(heretheoldladyraisedhervoice),andsomechapswhoweretooidleeventobeschoolmasters,mightsoonfindthattherewereotherchapsputovertheirheads,andsoshewouldhavethemtakecare,andlookprettysharpaboutthem.
