           Thepoorschoolmastershookhishead,andsaidthattheybarelyfilledthetwoforms.

           Asmallwhite-headedboywithasunburntfaceappearedatthedoorwhilehewasspeaking,andstoppingtheretomakearusticbow,cameinandtookhisseatupononeoftheforms.Thewhite-headedboythenputanopenbook,astonishinglydog’s-eareduponhisknees,andthrustinghishandsintohispocketsbegancountingthemarbleswithwhichtheywerefilled;displayingintheexpressionofhisfacearemarkablecapacityoftotallyabstractinghismindfromthespellingonwhichhiseyeswerefixed.Soonafterwardsanotherwhite-headedlittleboycamestragglingin,andafterhimared-headedlad,andafterhimtwomorewithwhiteheads,andthenonewithaflaxenpoll,andsoonuntiltheformswereoccupiedbyadozenboysorthereabouts,withheadsofeverycolourbutgrey,andrangingintheiragesfromfouryearsoldtofourteenyearsormore;forthelegsoftheyoungestwerealongwayfromthefloorwhenhesatupontheform,andtheeldestwasaheavygood-temperedfoolishfellow,abouthalfaheadtallerthantheschoolmaster.

           Atthetopofthefirstformthepostofhonourintheschoolwasthevacantplaceofthelittlesickscholar,andattheheadoftherowofpegsonwhichthosewhocameinhatsorcapswerewonttohangthemup,onewasleftempty.
