           Quilpglancedathisfree-spokenfriendwithamingledexpressionofcunninganddislike,andwringinghishandalmostatthesamemoment,declaredthathewasanuncommoncharacterandhadhiswarmestesteem.Withthattheyparted;MrSwivellertomakethebestofhiswayhomeandsleephimselfsober;andQuilptocogitateuponthediscoveryhehadmade,andexultintheprospectoftherichfieldofenjoymentandreprisalitopenedtohim.

           ItwasnotwithoutgreatreluctanceandmisgivingthatMrSwiveller,nextmorning,hisheadrackedbythefumesoftherenownedSchiedam,repairedtothelodgingofhisfriendTrent(whichwasintheroofofanoldhouseinanoldghostlyinn),andrecountedbyveryslowdegreeswhathadyesterdaytakenplacebetweenhimandQuilp.NorwasitwithoutgreatsurpriseandmuchspeculationonQuilp’sprobablemotives,norwithoutmanybittercommentsonDickSwiveller’sfolly,thathisfriendreceivedthetale.
