           Theponyhavingthoroughlysatisfiedhimselfastothenatureandpropertiesofthefire-plug,lookedintotheairafterhisoldenemiestheflies,andastherehappenedtobeoneofthemticklinghisearatthatmomentheshookhisheadandwhiskedhistail,afterwhichheappearedfullofthoughtbutquitecomfortableandcollected.Theoldgentlemanhavingexhaustedhispowersofpersuasion,alightedtoleadhim;whereuponthepony,perhapsbecauseheheldthistobeasufficientconcession,perhapsbecausehehappenedtocatchsightoftheotherbrass-plate,orperhapsbecausehewasinaspitefulhumour,dartedoffwiththeoldladyandstoppedattherighthouse,leavingtheoldgentlemantocomepantingonbehind.

           ItwasthenthatKitpresentedhimselfatthepony’shead,andtouchedhishatwithasmile.

           ‘Why,blessme,’criedtheoldgentleman,‘theladishere!Mydear,doyousee?’

           ‘IsaidI’dbehere,Sir,’saidKit,pattingWhisker’sneck.‘Ihopeyou’vehadapleasantride,sir.He’saverynicelittlepony.’

           ‘Mydear,’saidtheoldgentleman.‘Thisisanuncommonlad;agoodlad,I’msure.’

           ‘I’msureheis,’rejoinedtheoldlady.‘Averygoodlad,andIamsureheisagoodson.’

           Kitacknowledgedtheseexpressionsofconfidencebytouchinghishatagainandblushingverymuch.Theoldgentlemanthenhandedtheoldladyout,andafterlookingathimwithanapprovingsmile,theywentintothehousetalkingabouthimastheywent,Kitcouldnothelpfeeling.
