           Theyhadnotgoneveryfar,whenthechildwasagainstruckbythealteredbehaviourofMrThomasCodlin,whoinsteadofploddingonsulkilybyhimselfashehadheretoforedone,keptclosetoher,andwhenhehadanopportunityoflookingatherunseenbyhiscompanion,warnedherbycertainwryfacesandjerksoftheheadnottoputanytrustinShort,buttoreserveallconfidencesforCodlin.Neitherdidheconfinehimselftolooksandgestures,forwhensheandhergrandfatherwerewalkingonbesidetheaforesaidShort,andthatlittlemanwastalkingwithhisaccustomedcheerfulnessonavarietyofindifferentsubjects,ThomasCodlintestifiedhisjealousyanddistrustbyfollowingcloseatherheels,andoccasionallyadmonishingherankleswiththelegsofthetheatreinaveryabruptandpainfulmanner.

           Alltheseproceedingsnaturallymadethechildmorewatchfulandsuspicious,andshesoonobservedthatwhenevertheyhaltedtoperformoutsideavillagealehouseorotherplace,MrCodlinwhilehewentthroughhisshareoftheentertainmentskepthiseyesteadilyuponherandtheoldman,orwithashowofgreatfriendshipandconsiderationinvitedthelattertoleanuponhisarm,andsoheldhimtightuntiltherepresentationwasoverandtheyagainwentforward.EvenShortseemedtochangeinthisrespect,andtominglewithhisgood-naturesomethingofadesiretokeeptheminsafecustody.Thisincreasedthechild’smisgivings,andmadeheryetmoreanxiousanduneasy.
