           Theaircameladenwiththefragranceitcaughtuponitsway,andthebees,upborneuponitsscentedbreath,hummedforththeirdrowsysatisfactionastheyfloatedby.

           Theywerenowintheopencountry;thehouseswereveryfewandscatteredatlongintervals,oftenmilesapart.Occasionallytheycameuponaclusterofpoorcottages,somewithachairorlowboardputacrosstheopendoortokeepthescramblingchildrenfromtheroad,othersshutupclosewhileallthefamilywereworkinginthefields.Thesewereoftenthecommencementofalittlevillage:andafteranintervalcameawheelwright’sshedorperhapsablacksmith’sforge;thenathrivingfarmwithsleepycowslyingabouttheyard,andhorsespeeringoverthelowwallandscamperingawaywhenharnessedhorsespassedupontheroad,asthoughintriumphattheirfreedom.Thereweredullpigstoo,turningupthegroundinsearchofdaintyfood,andgruntingtheirmonotonousgrumblingsastheyprowledabout,orcrossedeachotherintheirquest;plumppigeonsskimmingroundtherooforstruttingontheeaves;andducksandgeese,farmoregracefulintheirownconceit,waddlingawkwardlyabouttheedgesofthepondorsailinggliblyonitssurface.Thefarm-yardpassed,thencamethelittleinn;thehumblerbeer-shop;andthevillagetradesman’s;thenthelawyer’sandtheparson’s,atwhosedreadnamesthebeer-shoptrembled;thechurchthenpeepedoutmodestlyfromaclumpoftrees;thentherewereafewmorecottages;thenthecage,andpound,andnotunfrequently,onabankbytheway-side,adeepolddustywell.
