Now,justasMrQuilplaidhishanduponthelock,andsawwithgreatastonishmentthatthefasteningswereundone,theknockingcameagainwiththemostirritatingviolence,andthedaylightwhichhadbeenshiningthroughthekey-holewasinterceptedontheoutsidebyahumaneye.Thedwarfwasverymuchexasperated,andwantingsomebodytowreakhisill-humourupon,determinedtodartoutsuddenly,andfavourMrsQuilpwithagentleacknowledgmentofherattentioninmakingthathideousuproar.
Withthisview,hedrewbackthelockverysilentlyandsoftly,andopeningthedoorallatonce,pouncedoutuponthepersonontheotherside,whohadatthatmomentraisedtheknockerforanotherapplication,andatwhomthedwarfranheadfirst:throwingouthishandsandfeettogether,andbitingtheairinthefulnessofhismalice.
Sofar,however,fromrushinguponsomebodywhoofferednoresistanceandimploredhismercy,MrQuilpwasnosoonerinthearmsoftheindividualwhomhehadtakenforhiswifethanhefoundhimselfcomplimentedwithtwostaggeringblowsonthehead,andtwomore,ofthesamequality,inthechest;andclosingwithhisassailant,suchashowerofbuffetsraineddownuponhispersonassufficedtoconvincehimthathewasinskilfulandexperiencedhands.Nothingdauntedbythisreception,heclungtighttohisopponent,andbitandhammeredawaywithsuchgood-willandheartiness,thatitwasatleastacoupleofminutesbeforehewasdislodged.
