           Whenhewaspresentshehadnoeyesforanyoneelse.Everythinghedid,wasright.Everythinghesaid,wasclever.Iftheireveningsattheparkwereconcludedwithcards,hecheatedhimselfandalltherestofthepartytogetheragoodhand.Ifdancingformedtheamusementofthenight,theywerepartnersforhalfthetime;andwhenobligedtoseparateforacoupleofdances,werecarefultostandtogetherandscarcelyspokeawordtoanybodyelse.Suchconductmadethemofcoursemostexceedinglylaughedat;butridiculecouldnotshame,andseemedhardlytoprovokethem.

           Mrs.Dashwoodenteredintoalltheirfeelingswithawarmthwhichlefthernoinclinationforcheckingthisexcessivedisplayofthem.Toheritwasbutthenaturalconsequenceofastrongaffectioninayoungandardentmind.

           Elinor’shappinesswasnotsogreat.Herheartwasnotsomuchatease,norhersatisfactionintheiramusementssopure.Theyaffordedhernocompanionthatcouldmakeamendsforwhatshehadleftbehind,northatcouldteachhertothinkofNorlandwithlessregretthanever.NeitherLadyMiddletonnorMrs.Jenningscouldsupplytohertheconversationshemissed;althoughthelatterwasaneverlastingtalker,andfromthefirsthadregardedherwithakindnesswhichensuredheralargeshareofherdiscourse.
