Asahouse,BartonCottage,thoughsmall,wascomfortableandcompact;butasacottageitwasdefective,forthebuildingwasregular,theroofwastiled,thewindowshutterswerenotpaintedgreen,norwerethewallscoveredwithhoneysuckles.Anarrowpassageleddirectlythroughthehouseintothegardenbehind.Oneachsideoftheentrancewasasittingroom,aboutsixteenfeetsquare;andbeyondthemweretheofficesandthestairs.Fourbed-roomsandtwogarretsformedtherestofthehouse.Ithadnotbeenbuiltmanyyearsandwasingoodrepair.IncomparisonofNorland,itwaspoorandsmallindeed!—butthetearswhichrecollectioncalledforthastheyenteredthehouseweresoondriedaway.Theywerecheeredbythejoyoftheservantsontheirarrival,andeachforthesakeoftheothersresolvedtoappearhappy.
