Mrs.DashwoodremainedatNorlandseveralmonths;notfromanydisinclinationtomovewhenthesightofeverywellknownspotceasedtoraisetheviolentemotionwhichitproducedforawhile;forwhenherspiritsbegantorevive,andhermindbecamecapableofsomeotherexertionthanthatofheighteningitsafflictionbymelancholyremembrances,shewasimpatienttobegone,andindefatigableinherinquiriesforasuitabledwellingintheneighbourhoodofNorland;fortoremovefarfromthatbelovedspotwasimpossible.Butshecouldhearofnosituationthatatonceansweredhernotionsofcomfortandease,andsuitedtheprudenceofhereldestdaughter,whosesteadierjudgmentrejectedseveralhousesastoolargefortheirincome,whichhermotherwouldhaveapproved.
Mrs.Dashwoodhadbeeninformedbyherhusbandofthesolemnpromiseonthepartofhissonintheirfavour,whichgavecomforttohislastearthlyreflections.Shedoubtedthesincerityofthisassurancenomorethanhehaddoubtedithimself,andshethoughtofitforherdaughters’sakewithsatisfaction,thoughasforherselfshewaspersuadedthatamuchsmallerprovisionthan7000Lwouldsupportherinaffluence.Fortheirbrother’ssake,too,forthesakeofhisownheart,sherejoiced;andshereproachedherselfforbeingunjusttohismeritbefore,inbelievinghimincapableofgenerosity.Hisattentivebehaviourtoherselfandhissistersconvincedherthattheirwelfarewasdeartohim,and,foralongtime,shefirmlyreliedontheliberalityofhisintentions.
