           Elinorsaw,withgreatuneasinessthelowspiritsofherfriend.Hisvisitaffordedherbutaverypartialsatisfaction,whilehisownenjoymentinitappearedsoimperfect.Itwasevidentthathewasunhappy;shewisheditwereequallyevidentthathestilldistinguishedherbythesameaffectionwhichonceshehadfeltnodoubtofinspiring;buthithertothecontinuanceofhispreferenceseemedveryuncertain;andthereservednessofhismannertowardshercontradictedonemomentwhatamoreanimatedlookhadintimatedtheprecedingone.

           HejoinedherandMarianneinthebreakfast-roomthenextmorningbeforetheothersweredown;andMarianne,whowasalwayseagertopromotetheirhappinessasfarasshecould,soonleftthemtothemselves.Butbeforeshewashalfwayupstairssheheardtheparlourdooropen,and,turninground,wasastonishedtoseeEdwardhimselfcomeout.

           Edwardreturnedtothemwithfreshadmirationofthesurroundingcountry;inhiswalktothevillage,hehadseenmanypartsofthevalleytoadvantage;andthevillageitself,inamuchhighersituationthanthecottage,affordedageneralviewofthewhole,whichhadexceedinglypleasedhim.
