           BartonParkwasabouthalfamilefromthecottage.Theladieshadpassednearitintheirwayalongthevalley,butitwasscreenedfromtheirviewathomebytheprojectionofahill.Thehousewaslargeandhandsome;andtheMiddletonslivedinastyleofequalhospitalityandelegance.TheformerwasforSirJohn’sgratification,thelatterforthatofhislady.Theywerescarcelyeverwithoutsomefriendsstayingwiththeminthehouse,andtheykeptmorecompanyofeverykindthananyotherfamilyintheneighbourhood.Itwasnecessarytothehappinessofboth;forhoweverdissimilarintemperandoutwardbehaviour,theystronglyresembledeachotherinthattotalwantoftalentandtastewhichconfinedtheiremployments,unconnectedwithsuchassocietyproduced,withinaverynarrowcompass.SirJohnwasasportsman,LadyMiddletonamother.Hehuntedandshot,andshehumouredherchildren;andtheseweretheironlyresources.LadyMiddletonhadtheadvantageofbeingabletospoilherchildrenalltheyearround,whileSirJohn’sindependentemploymentswereinexistenceonlyhalfthetime.Continualengagementsathomeandabroad,however,suppliedallthedeficienciesofnatureandeducation;supportedthegoodspiritsofSirJohn,andgaveexercisetothegoodbreedingofhiswife.

           LadyMiddletonpiquedherselfupontheeleganceofhertable,andofallherdomesticarrangements;andfromthiskindofvanitywashergreatestenjoymentinanyoftheirparties.
