           ThefamilyofDashwoodhadlongbeensettledinSussex.Theirestatewaslarge,andtheirresidencewasatNorlandPark,inthecentreoftheirproperty,where,formanygenerations,theyhadlivedinsorespectableamannerastoengagethegeneralgoodopinionoftheirsurroundingacquaintance.Thelateownerofthisestatewasasingleman,wholivedtoaveryadvancedage,andwhoformanyyearsofhislife,hadaconstantcompanionandhousekeeperinhissister.Butherdeath,whichhappenedtenyearsbeforehisown,producedagreatalterationinhishome;fortosupplyherloss,heinvitedandreceivedintohishousethefamilyofhisnephewMr.HenryDashwood,thelegalinheritoroftheNorlandestate,andthepersontowhomheintendedtobequeathit.Inthesocietyofhisnephewandniece,andtheirchildren,theoldGentleman’sdayswerecomfortablyspent.Hisattachmenttothemallincreased.TheconstantattentionofMr.andMrs.HenryDashwoodtohiswishes,whichproceedednotmerelyfrominterest,butfromgoodnessofheart,gavehimeverydegreeofsolidcomfortwhichhisagecouldreceive;andthecheerfulnessofthechildrenaddedarelishtohisexistence.

           Byaformermarriage,Mr.HenryDashwoodhadoneson:byhispresentlady,threedaughters.Theson,asteadyrespectableyoungman,wasamplyprovidedforbythefortuneofhismother,whichhadbeenlarge,andhalfofwhichdevolvedonhimonhiscomingofage.Byhisownmarriage,likewise,whichhappenedsoonafterwards,headdedtohiswealth.
