           ThePalmersreturnedtoClevelandthenextday,andthetwofamiliesatBartonwereagainlefttoentertaineachother.Butthisdidnotlastlong;Elinorhadhardlygottheirlastvisitorsoutofherhead,hadhardlydonewonderingatCharlotte’sbeingsohappywithoutacause,atMr.Palmer’sactingsosimply,withgoodabilities,andatthestrangeunsuitablenesswhichoftenexistedbetweenhusbandandwife,beforeSirJohn’sandMrs.Jennings’sactivezealinthecauseofsociety,procuredhersomeothernewacquaintancetoseeandobserve.

           Inamorning’sexcursiontoExeter,theyhadmetwithtwoyoungladies,whomMrs.Jenningshadthesatisfactionofdiscoveringtobeherrelations,andthiswasenoughforSirJohntoinvitethemdirectlytothepark,assoonastheirpresentengagementsatExeterwereover.TheirengagementsatExeterinstantlygavewaybeforesuchaninvitation,andLadyMiddletonwasthrownintonolittlealarmonthereturnofSirJohn,byhearingthatshewasverysoontoreceiveavisitfromtwogirlswhomshehadneverseeninherlife,andofwhoseelegance,—whosetolerablegentilityeven,shecouldhavenoproof;fortheassurancesofherhusbandandmotheronthatsubjectwentfornothingatall.Theirbeingherrelationstoomadeitsomuchtheworse;andMrs.Jennings’sattemptsatconsolationwerethereforeunfortunatelyfounded,whensheadvisedherdaughternottocareabouttheirbeingsofashionable;becausetheywereallcousinsandmustputupwithoneanother.
