           "Notastefordrawing!"repliedElinor,"whyshouldyouthinkso?Hedoesnotdrawhimself,indeed,buthehasgreatpleasureinseeingtheperformancesofotherpeople,andIassureyouheisbynomeansdeficientinnaturaltaste,thoughhehasnothadopportunitiesofimprovingit.Hadheeverbeeninthewayoflearning,Ithinkhewouldhavedrawnverywell.Hedistrustshisownjudgmentinsuchmatterssomuch,thatheisalwaysunwillingtogivehisopiniononanypicture;buthehasaninnateproprietyandsimplicityoftaste,whichingeneraldirecthimperfectlyright."

           Mariannewasafraidofoffending,andsaidnomoreonthesubject;butthekindofapprobationwhichElinordescribedasexcitedinhimbythedrawingsofotherpeople,wasveryfarfromthatrapturousdelight,which,inheropinion,couldalonebecalledtaste.Yet,thoughsmilingwithinherselfatthemistake,shehonouredhersisterforthatblindpartialitytoEdwardwhichproducedit.

           "Ihope,Marianne,"continuedElinor,"youdonotconsiderhimasdeficientingeneraltaste.Indeed,IthinkImaysaythatyoucannot,foryourbehaviourtohimisperfectlycordial,andifTHATwereyouropinion,Iamsureyoucouldneverbeciviltohim."

           Mariannehardlyknewwhattosay.Shewouldnotwoundthefeelingsofhersisteronanyaccount,andyettosaywhatshedidnotbelievewasimpossible.Atlengthshereplied:
