           Mrs.Dashwooddidnothearunmovedthevindicationofherformerfavourite.Sherejoicedinhisbeingclearedfromsomepartofhisimputedguilt;—shewassorryforhim;—shewishedhimhappy.Butthefeelingsofthepastcouldnotberecalled.—Nothingcouldrestorehimwithafaithunbroken—acharacterunblemished,toMarianne.Nothingcoulddoawaytheknowledgeofwhatthelatterhadsufferedthroughhismeans,norremovetheguiltofhisconducttowardsEliza.Nothingcouldreplacehim,therefore,inherformeresteem,norinjuretheinterestsofColonelBrandon.

           HadMrs.Dashwood,likeherdaughter,heardWilloughby’sstoryfromhimself—hadshewitnessedhisdistress,andbeenundertheinfluenceofhiscountenanceandhismanner,itisprobablethathercompassionwouldhavebeengreater.ButitwasneitherinElinor’spower,norinherwish,torousesuchfeelingsinanother,byherretailedexplanation,ashadatfirstbeencalledforthinherself.Reflectionhadgivencalmnesstoherjudgment,andsoberedherownopinionofWilloughby’sdeserts;—shewished,therefore,todeclareonlythesimpletruth,andlayopensuchfactsaswerereallyduetohischaracter,withoutanyembellishmentoftendernesstoleadthefancyastray.
