Unaccountable,however,asthecircumstancesofhisreleasemightappeartothewholefamily,itwascertainthatEdwardwasfree;andtowhatpurposethatfreedomwouldbeemployedwaseasilypre-determinedbyall;—forafterexperiencingtheblessingsofONEimprudentengagement,contractedwithouthismother’sconsent,ashehadalreadydoneformorethanfouryears,nothinglesscouldbeexpectedofhiminthefailureofTHAT,thantheimmediatecontractionofanother.
HiserrandatBarton,infact,wasasimpleone.ItwasonlytoaskElinortomarryhim;—andconsideringthathewasnotaltogetherinexperiencedinsuchaquestion,itmightbestrangethatheshouldfeelsouncomfortableinthepresentcaseashereallydid,somuchinneedofencouragementandfreshair.
Howsoonhehadwalkedhimselfintotheproperresolution,however,howsoonanopportunityofexercisingitoccurred,inwhatmannerheexpressedhimself,andhowhewasreceived,neednotbeparticularlytold.Thisonlyneedbesaid;—thatwhentheyallsatdowntotableatfouro’clock,aboutthreehoursafterhisarrival,hehadsecuredhislady,engagedhermother’sconsent,andwasnotonlyintherapturousprofessionofthelover,but,intherealityofreasonandtruth,oneofthehappiestofmen.Hissituationindeedwasmorethancommonlyjoyful.Hehadmorethantheordinarytriumphofacceptedlovetoswellhisheart,andraisehisspirits.
