           Shesawitwithconcern;forwhatcouldasilentmanoffiveandthirtyhope,whenopposedtoaverylivelyoneoffiveandtwenty?andasshecouldnotevenwishhimsuccessful,sheheartilywishedhimindifferent.Shelikedhim—inspiteofhisgravityandreserve,shebeheldinhimanobjectofinterest.Hismanners,thoughserious,weremild;andhisreserveappearedrathertheresultofsomeoppressionofspiritsthanofanynaturalgloominessoftemper.SirJohnhaddroppedhintsofpastinjuriesanddisappointments,whichjustifiedherbeliefofhisbeinganunfortunateman,andsheregardedhimwithrespectandcompassion.

           PerhapsshepitiedandesteemedhimthemorebecausehewasslightedbyWilloughbyandMarianne,who,prejudicedagainsthimforbeingneitherlivelynoryoung,seemedresolvedtoundervaluehismerits.
