           SoacutelydidMrs.Dashwoodfeelthisungraciousbehaviour,andsoearnestlydidshedespiseherdaughter-in-lawforit,that,onthearrivalofthelatter,shewouldhavequittedthehouseforever,hadnottheentreatyofhereldestgirlinducedherfirsttoreflectontheproprietyofgoing,andherowntenderloveforallherthreechildrendeterminedherafterwardstostay,andfortheirsakesavoidabreachwiththeirbrother.

           Elinor,thiseldestdaughter,whoseadvicewassoeffectual,possessedastrengthofunderstanding,andcoolnessofjudgment,whichqualifiedher,thoughonlynineteen,tobethecounsellorofhermother,andenabledherfrequentlytocounteract,totheadvantageofthemall,thateagernessofmindinMrs.Dashwoodwhichmustgenerallyhaveledtoimprudence.Shehadanexcellentheart;—herdispositionwasaffectionate,andherfeelingswerestrong;butsheknewhowtogovernthem:itwasaknowledgewhichhermotherhadyettolearn;andwhichoneofhersistershadresolvednevertobetaught.

           Marianne’sabilitieswere,inmanyrespects,quiteequaltoElinor’s.Shewassensibleandclever;buteagerineverything:hersorrows,herjoys,couldhavenomoderation.Shewasgenerous,amiable,interesting:shewaseverythingbutprudent.Theresemblancebetweenherandhermotherwasstrikinglygreat
