           "WhendoyouwritetoColonelBrandon,ma’am?"wasaninquirywhichsprungfromtheimpatienceofhermindtohavesomethinggoingon.

           "Iwrotetohim,mylove,lastweek,andratherexpecttosee,thantohearfromhimagain.Iearnestlypressedhiscomingtous,andshouldnotbesurprisedtoseehimwalkintodayortomorrow,oranyday."

           Thiswasgainingsomething,somethingtolookforwardto.ColonelBrandonmusthavesomeinformationtogive.

           Scarcelyhadshesodeterminedit,whenthefigureofamanonhorsebackdrewhereyestothewindow.Hestoptattheirgate.Itwasagentleman,itwasColonelBrandonhimself.Nowshecouldhearmore;andshetrembledinexpectationofit.But—itwasNOTColonelBrandon—neitherhisair—norhisheight.
