           Theinstrumentwasunlocked,everybodypreparedtobecharmed,andMarianne,whosangverywell,attheirrequestwentthroughthechiefofthesongswhichLadyMiddletonhadbroughtintothefamilyonhermarriage,andwhichperhapshadlaineversinceinthesamepositiononthepianoforte,forherladyshiphadcelebratedthateventbygivingupmusic,althoughbyhermother’saccount,shehadplayedextremelywell,andbyherownwasveryfondofit.

           Marianne’sperformancewashighlyapplauded.SirJohnwasloudinhisadmirationattheendofeverysong,andasloudinhisconversationwiththeotherswhileeverysonglasted.LadyMiddletonfrequentlycalledhimtoorder,wonderedhowanyone’sattentioncouldbedivertedfrommusicforamoment,andaskedMariannetosingaparticularsongwhichMariannehadjustfinished.ColonelBrandonalone,ofalltheparty,heardherwithoutbeinginraptures.Hepaidheronlythecomplimentofattention;andshefeltarespectforhimontheoccasion,whichtheothershadreasonablyforfeitedbytheirshamelesswantoftaste.Hispleasureinmusic,thoughitamountednottothatecstaticdelightwhichalonecouldsympathizewithherown,wasestimablewhencontrastedagainstthehorribleinsensibilityoftheothers;andshewasreasonableenoughtoallowthatamanoffiveandthirtymightwellhaveoutlivedallacutenessoffeelingandeveryexquisitepowerofenjoyment.Shewasperfectlydisposedtomakeeveryallowanceforthecolonel’sadvancedstateoflifewhichhumanityrequired.
