           Theworldhadmadehimextravagantandvain—Extravaganceandvanityhadmadehimcold-heartedandselfish.Vanity,whileseekingitsownguiltytriumphattheexpenseofanother,hadinvolvedhiminarealattachment,whichextravagance,oratleastitsoffspring,necessity,hadrequiredtobesacrificed.Eachfaultypropensityinleadinghimtoevil,hadledhimlikewisetopunishment.Theattachment,fromwhichagainsthonour,againstfeeling,againsteverybetterinteresthehadoutwardlytornhimself,now,whennolongerallowable,governedeverythought;andtheconnection,forthesakeofwhichhehad,withlittlescruple,lefthersistertomisery,waslikelytoproveasourceofunhappinesstohimselfofafarmoreincurablenature.FromareverieofthiskindshewasrecalledattheendofsomeminutesbyWilloughby,who,rousinghimselffromareverieatleastequallypainful,startedupinpreparationforgoing,andsaid—

           "Thereisnouseinstayinghere;Imustbeoff."

           "Areyougoingbacktotown?"
