Thetimewasnowdrawingon,whenColonelBrandonmightbeexpectedback.Atteno’clock,shetrusted,oratleastnotmuchlaterhermotherwouldberelievedfromthedreadfulsuspenseinwhichshemustnowbetravellingtowardsthem.TheColonel,too!—perhapsscarcelylessanobjectofpity!—Oh!—howslowwastheprogressoftimewhichyetkepttheminignorance!
Atseveno’clock,leavingMariannestillsweetlyasleep,shejoinedMrs.Jenningsinthedrawing-roomtotea.Ofbreakfastshehadbeenkeptbyherfears,andofdinnerbytheirsuddenreverse,fromeatingmuch;—andthepresentrefreshment,therefore,withsuchfeelingsofcontentasshebroughttoit,wasparticularlywelcome.Mrs.Jenningswouldhavepersuadedher,atitsconclusion,totakesomerestbeforehermother’sarrival,andallowHERtotakeherplacebyMarianne;butElinorhadnosenseoffatigue,nocapabilityofsleepatthatmomentabouther,andshewasnottobekeptawayfromhersisteranunnecessaryinstant.Mrs.Jenningsthereforeattendingherupstairsintothesickchamber,tosatisfyherselfthatallcontinuedright,leftherthereagaintoherchargeandherthoughts,andretiredtoherownroomtowritelettersandsleep.
