           Thelittleshesaidwasallinlamentationofthisinevitabledelay;thoughElinortriedtoraiseherspirits,andmakeherbelieve,assheTHENreallybelievedherself,thatitwouldbeaveryshortone.

           Thenextdayproducedlittleornoalterationinthestateofthepatient;shecertainlywasnotbetter,and,exceptthattherewasnoamendment,didnotappearworse.Theirpartywasnowfartherreduced;forMr.Palmer,thoughveryunwillingtogoaswellfromrealhumanityandgood-nature,asfromadislikeofappearingtobefrightenedawaybyhiswife,waspersuadedatlastbyColonelBrandontoperformhispromiseoffollowingher;andwhilehewaspreparingtogo,ColonelBrandonhimself,withamuchgreaterexertion,begantotalkofgoinglikewise.—Here,however,thekindnessofMrs.Jenningsinterposedmostacceptably;fortosendtheColonelawaywhilehislovewasinsomuchuneasinessonhersister’saccount,wouldbetodeprivethemboth,shethought,ofeverycomfort;andthereforetellinghimatoncethathisstayatClevelandwasnecessarytoherself,thatsheshouldwanthimtoplayatpiquetofanevening,whileMissDashwoodwasabovewithhersister,&c.sheurgedhimsostronglytoremain,thathe,whowasgratifyingthefirstwishofhisownheartbyacompliance,couldnotlongevenaffecttodemur;especiallyasMrs.Jennings’sentreatywaswarmlysecondedbyMr.Palmer,whoseemedtofeelarelieftohimself,inleavingbehindhimapersonsowellabletoassistoradviseMissDashwoodinanyemergence.
